European Made Carving Hatchet - 14oz

A new mark from a small European maker, and the idea behind it is a simple one: a tool you can be proud of for years, without spending a fortune. The hatchet is European from end to end. The steel and leather come from Europe, Stubai forges the head in Austria, and the maker does the sharpening by hand and makes the beautiful leather sheath. Each head is ground at 30°, the angle the maker considers best for this carbon steel, and every hatchet is tested by slicing paper before it goes out. The handle is European ash, shaped for close carving work and oiled with linseed (never varnished) for a firm grip that will not slip. This 14 oz head is the lighter of the two we carry, and the one for spoons, bowls, and long sessions at the block. It arrives genuinely sharp, which is why it comes with a welted leather sheath that protects the edge in storage and transport, and protects you from it. The maker considers the sheath part of the tool and does not sell it separately. Carbon steel takes a keen edge and is easy to touch up, but it will rust if put away wet; a wipe of oil keeps it bright. For heavier roughing out, look at the 21 oz version. Measures 14" L x 4" W.
